With Discovery Insure, you can rest assured that your personal possessions are suitably covered.

This Discovery Insure SmartTip explains how you can make sure you have chosen the right cover for your portable possessions.

Insuring portable possessions

You can use the general clothing and personal effects category to cover valuable items that are carried with or on you on a day-to-day basis. In the event of a claim, the maximum value per item that is paid is the greater of R1 500 or 20% of the general clothing and personal effects sum insured. Portable possessions with a higher value than the per item limit need to be specified to ensure full cover.

You need to be aware of items that are excluded from this section of cover. Portable possessions that are excluded from the general clothing and personal effects category need to be specified to make sure they are fully covered. All this information is explained in the Plan Guide.

In addition, portable possessions that are individually specified do not need to be included in the household contents sum insured. For example, if you have contents valued at R500 000, which includes a diamond ring valued at R100 000, the ring can be specified for R100 000 and the contents can be insured for R400 000. This will ensure that you are fully covered.

You can also make use of the estimated total loss feature within each category of item.

Items that are usually insured under the all risks portable possessions cover usually include things like:
  • Cell Phone
  • Camera
  • GPS
  • Sporting equipment
  • watches
  • Jewellery
  • General clothing
  • Sunglasses
