The Importance of ImpactAlert to You

Discovery Insure provides you with advanced safety features such as ImpactAlert that gives you peace of mind about being on the road. Clients who join Vitalitydrive and choose to have a DQ-Track installed at no additional cost will automatically benefit from ImpactAlert.

When your DQ-Track detects a severe impact, it immediately notifies Discovery Insure. Discovery Insure will monitor your car to determine if you continue driving. If the car is stationary, Discovery Insure will try to call you to find out if you need any assistance. If you can’t be reached, an emergency response unit will be dispatched immediately to the scene of the accident. If necessary, emergency medical assistance will also be dispatched to the scene. Discovery Health members will benefit from the emergency medical response unit having access to your health records.

Important Information for You

Discovery Insure Quote Request

ImpactAlert has been designed to trigger when the DQ-Tracks detects a harsh G-force. This is generally experienced in a severe car accident. However, this cannot be guaranteed in all circumstances, in the same way as the deployment of airbags is not guaranteed. For example; if the DQ-Track is damaged during a severe accident or if the severe accident occurs in an area where there is no cellular reception, Discovery Insure may not receive a notification.

In addition, Discovery Insure makes sure that your DQ-Track is always in working order by monitoring the device on a daily basis. Should the DQ-Track be faulty over a couple of days, Discovery Insure will contact you to arrange a convenient time and place for the device to be checked  and repaired or replaced at no additional cost.

Preventing Water Leaks In Your Home

posted May 14, 2013, 2:13 AM by Dean Wicks   [ updated May 14, 2013, 2:14 AM ]

Preventing water leaks.

By encouraging you to keep your homes well maintained, you will avoid unnecessary claims. This week we look at how to detect and prevent water leaks in the kitchen and bathroom. Leaking water can cause serious damage over time so it’s crucial to do these checks regularly.

Water leaks can happen anywhere and in any home. Water leaks mostly occur in kitchens and bathrooms. A constant leak wastes thousands of litres of water a year and can cost you thousands of Rands. Leaks left undetected also cause more damage. Early detection of leaks often means the difference between a simple clean-up and major plumbing repairs.

Here are some tips to help you prevent water leaks in your home:

Preventing leaks in the kitchen

  • If the kitchen sink drains slowly, or not at all, it could be due to a blocked drain. A blocked drain can cause a leak in the drainpipes under the sink. Try using some eco-friendly drain cleaner to remove the blockage. If that doesn’t work it’s best to call a plumber for assistance.
  • Every few months, check if the hose connecting the dishwasher to the water supply is secure, connected properly and not leaking. If you suspect water is leaking from the dishwasher, call a professional to repair any damage.
  • Refrigerators often cause leaks. A manual defrost refrigerator will have to be cleaned out and defrosted at least twice a year to prevent leaks. If the refrigerator has an icemaker, check the hose connecting the refrigerator to the water supply is secure, connected properly and is not leaking.

Preventing leaks in the bathroom

  • Check the showers, baths and toilets for leaking water, discoloration or soft areas in the floor and on the walls nearby. If you suspect a water leak, call a plumber for help before the leak causes further damage.
  • Also make sure the areas around the sinks, taps and drains are sealed properly. If you see trickling water, damp cabinets, mould or leaking taps it may be signs of a leak.
  • Check pressure valves and connections of the geysers for any leaks. Also make sure the drip trays are in place and that the outlet joins are sealed properly. The drip tray is a regulatory requirement for geysers in South Africa and can prevent gradual damage from a steady leak or minimise damage if the geyser bursts.

What To Know When Claiming

posted May 14, 2013, 1:29 AM by Dean Wicks   [ updated May 14, 2013, 1:30 AM ]

Keep your damaged items in the event of a claim.

It’s important to make sure you know what to do if you need to claim. This will help  make sure you are not disadvantaged in any way.

You should always contact Discovery Insure as soon as possible after you have suffered damage to or a loss of an item. This will allow Discovery to help you follow the correct claims procedure and make sure your claim is not negatively impacted by any incorrect actions.

Discovery Insure Quote Request

If you suffer damage to an asset, such as your television set, you should not throw it away. Discovery's claims assessors need to inspect the damage to determine the potential value of the claim (for example; assessing if the item can be repaired or if it needs to be replaced) and whether or not there is any salvage. They will also use it to verify that the item does exist. If you throw away a damaged item, Discovery might be unable to prove its existence which may result in the claim being rejected.

Valuation Certificates And Proof Of Ownership

posted May 9, 2013, 4:56 AM by Dean Wicks   [ updated May 9, 2013, 4:57 AM ]

Discovery Insure SmartTips: Understanding valuation certificates and proof of ownership

Discovery Insure provides you with flexible options to insure your valuable items like jewellery, artworks or other items that are rare, unique or collectibles. Your can insure these items under your household contents cover or under your  portable possessions. The cover under each of these sections differs so it is important to make sure you have covered your valuable items correctly, according to your needs.

Valuation certificates and proof of ownership

At claims stage, regardless of whether your valuable items were in a safe or not, you would have to provide Discovery Insure with valuation certificates and proof of ownership. This requirement is regardless of whether the assessor was shown valuation certificates during the original inventory assessment. Without these certificates, the most Discovery will pay for any one item is R5 000.

However, in the event of a total household contents loss, for example; where the your entire house burns down, you would not have to provide a valuation certificate as long as the assessor was shown the valuation certificate during the asset inventory assessment and made a note of it on the asset inventory report.

Discovery Insure Quote Request

You must always keep up-to-date valuation certificates to make sure the sum insured is correct for all your valuable items.  It is important that valuation certificates accurately reflect the necessary specifications, for example; the clarity and weight of a diamond ring.

It’s advisable that you also keep copies of the valuation certificates somewhere other than in your home to make sure they are available at claims stage.

Please remember that during an asset inventory assessment the assessors will not valuate or give advice on appropriate cover, but will simply confirm the existence of the items. You can get jewellery valuations from any registered jeweller.

Discovery Insure SmartTips: Cover for items stored in your car

Discovery Insure you as the client to take reasonable precautions and steps to prevent loss or damage. This includes making sure that items are not visibly displayed in your cars and making sure your cars are safely locked.

The importance of safely storing items in your cars

It is important to make you are aware of these requirements as Discovery do not cover items that are stolen from unattended cars if the items were not locked inside the luggage compartment or locked inside the interior of the car. Discovery also don’t cover any items stolen from a your car as a result of “jamming”, whereby a device is used to block the signal sent from your car’s remote to lock your car. Your are expected to make sure that your car is safely locked before leaving it unattended. All claims for goods stolen from a car require that there has been visible, violent and forcible entry into the car.

Please remember  that items kept in your cars need to be insured under the portable possessions section of your Discovery Insure plans as these items are not covered under your vehicle cover. It is particularly important that you have also specified items that won’t be covered under the general clothing and personal effects section. A good example is a laptop which falls under the audio visual category and must be specified to be properly covered.

Here are a few tips that will help you keep the valuable items you travel with safe. These tips are particularly important for you that travel with accessories in your cars such as GPS’, iPods, cellphones and docking stations.

Costs Remain High Despite Recent Decrease In Fuel Price

Those of you who have earned up to 50% back on your monthly BP fuel spend have managed to protect yourselves against the steep fuel price hikes over the past 21 months.

It’s important to note that the recent fuel price drop comes after three consecutive monthly price hikes. Have a look at this graph to see the actual fuel inflation over the past year.

Vitalitydrive members absorb these increases by earning up to R700 back on your monthly BP fuel spend.Discovery have paid out more than R37.5 million in fuel rewards to date. This amounts to around 58 000 tanks of fuel!

Home Maintenance

The Robert Group can help keep your homes in great condition and avoid unnecessary claims that arise from lack of maintenance.

Making sure walls, windows and doors are in good condition

Walls, windows and doors are an important part of any house – both indoor and outdoor. Use the list below to check walls, windows and doors for any problem areas. Being proactive about home maintenance can help you to avoid unnecessary costs.

Walls

  • Look for softening in the walls. This could be because of water leakage or damp and can cause the walls to crack. Contact a professional for advice if it looks as if there could be water damage in the walls.
  • Leaning walls may indicate dangerous structural defects. Missing mortar and bricks also point to structural defects. Contact a professional to repair any defects in the walls.
  • Peeling wallpaper and paint can destroy the plaster on walls. Replace wallpaper or repaint walls to make sure the plaster stays in good condition.

Windows

  • Look for broken glass panes, moulding around the frame and damaged window frames. Replace broken glass and damaged window frames as soon as possible.
  • Check that locks and latches work properly. It they don’t, contact a locksmith to fix them.
  • Repair any damage to the burglar bars as soon as possible.
  • Check whether windows are sealed properly and that there is putty around glass panels. Replace the window seals and putty if windows are not closing properly.
  • Check that the windows open and shut smoothly and that hinges are in good working order. Repair or replace windows and hinges if they are not shutting smoothly.
